A mixed review for the Lezyne Macro Front / Micro Rear LED Light Set. To hold, the build quality feels among the best I have come across with regards to bike lights. As for the power (up to 300 lumens) these bad boys would not look out of place mounted on the front and rear are a aeroplane, both units have a good number of lighting modes, including flashing and pulsing modes.
I tried these lights through the town and they perform really well, the front light has a very good wide angle letting other road users know where you are. The rear also performs well with equal visibility. On unlit back roads, both units really shine ( haha you like that?), seriously though, these lights really do perform well in completely dark areas, I’ve even use one as a torch during a late night out.
So, we have covered the positives, short I know, so here’s what I didn’t like. The front light clips in and pulls out OK but the rear is a pain, nearly every time I pop the unit our, the cap protecting the charging port comes off which is really annoying.
The charging cover on both units is not that great, the lights themselves are metal and the cap is plastic which spells disaster and is easily cross threaded. Charging time is a little longer than expected given the run time, on full brightness I managed to drain both lights in a single ride which was just under 3 hours, for that reason I wouldn’t recommend these for commuting as your’ll need to be charging them every other day, plus with non replaceable batteries these could work our a very expensive lighting solution.
Talking of charging, this is a bit of a rushed design in my opinion, the front light has a female micro USB port which, when the cover is removed exposes the printed circuit board – this is not good, it would be far to easy to accidentally damage the PCB. The rear light has a mail USB fitting meaning the unit sticks out the front of your PC or laptop, again, this could easily be snapped off.
